The Summer I Turned Pretty Stays Strong in Second Season

The+Summer+I+Turned+Pretty+Stays+Strong+in+Second+Season

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 OF THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY

The newest season of Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. This season is just as witty, romantic, entertaining, and enjoyable as the first. In the end of the first season, Belly makes things messy between the two Fisher brothers when she ultimately chooses Jeremiah over Conrad, then later changes her mind and begins a new relationship with Conrad, her childhood crush. This season really focuses on Belly Conklin, Steven Conklin, Jeremiah Fisher, and Conrad Fisher, reviving their friendship after Susannah Fisher’s death. I believe that this was the right way to carry on the show.

Throughout the second season, Belly has flashbacks of moments she shared with Conrad throughout fall and winter, in which most of these scenes, Taylor Swift songs play. Fans of the show have noticed that Taylor Swift songs are only played in scenes shared between Conrad and Belly. However, Jenny Han broke this streak by adding “Delicate (Taylor’s Version)” to a scene with Jeremiah and Belly. The show also plays other popular artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Ariana Grande, Mac Miller, and more. One of the characters, Milo, even has his own song released on Spotify titled “Getting Even With Steven”.

The show has a way of capturing the newest trends even though they film episodes months before they are actually released. Some of these include jewelry, clothing, and music. For example, Belly and Taylor wear the newest style of clothing in each episode. You can even buy clothing and jewelry inspired by the show on sites like Etsy and even Amazon.

Overall, this season was amazing. For it being Lola Tung’s (Belly) first time ever acting, she did a great job. She showed the emotions of her character really well. The only thing that I would change about this season is Aunt Julia and Skye. I didn’t really see a purpose for them in the show. I believe they should have kept it the same as the book, in which the Fisher’s dad is trying to sell the summer home. All in all, I would rate this season a 4/5 but with a few minor fixes, this show is definitely worthy of a solid 5/5.
