NickNack Cookies – Nick Brady

Joplin High School is a diversely talented place filled with students who do amazing things every day, some of whom you may not know. One of our JHS students has been building his own small business over the past few months and has seen great success. Sophomore Nick Brady, owner and establisher of Nick Nack Cookies, has been working hard at evolving his growing cookie business. Nick says that he has always enjoyed baking with his family, however, something, in particular, sparked the idea to start selling his baked goods.

The young business owner explains that the thought came to him while he and his buddies were in need of fundraising.

“Some of my friends and I were planning on making a short film, but none of us had jobs,” Nick explained. After brainstorming ideas, Nick suggested selling his cookies. “At the time I had made some cookies just because, and I thought it would be cool if I could sell those to raise money for the movie.” The business grew from there.

To start, Nick sold his cookies around JHS and saw great amounts of success from that. “I received a lot of positive feedback, and I decided to start bringing them weekly,” he explained. After a few months of selling his baked goods in and out of school, he thought up the idea to sell his cookies at Empire Market here in Joplin. Through that, his business has grown tremendously and will continue to grow in the future.

In growing his business, Nick has had gracious amounts of support which have contributed to the business in their own ways. He explained how his parents have been a great help.

“My parents allowed me to use the mixer and oven, and have always supported me through it, like pushing me to finish a big batch even when I’m super tired.”

Additionally, Nick’s friends have provided just as much help. “And with my friends, they have always been honest if a flavor is good or not, and they’ve helped me come up with new ideas for the business,” he added.

Nick’s motivation to stick with the business comes from his customers and their reactions to his creations. “Normally, a person’s automatic thought is that my mom or another family member made the cookies or I just found the recipe online,” Nick explained. “But when I tell them that the cookies are 100% me, their response changes completely and I love seeing that amazement in people,” he added.
