Students in the Shadows: What Happens When Schools Misplace Priorities

Students in the Shadows: What Happens When Schools Misplace Priorities

Years ago, schools began to help kids and young adults get an education and learn to read and to write. Over the years, schools have grown to really love sports and sporting events for students. Sports have become a very big deal in schools and are talked about quite a bit.

In my opinion, I believe schools have started to prioritize sports a lot more than education. Sports are a way to make school more fun and more enjoyable, but that has caused some students to not care how they’re doing in school and that they deserve more than the students who don’t play sports.

I have noticed while being in high school at two different schools that students who don’t play sports get less recognition than students who do play sports. I know that because I have felt that way and so have people I have talked to about this. It seems that students who don’t play sports aren’t credited enough for the accomplishments that they achieve.

You see students who play sports get passes for school work because of sports and treated differently than students who don’t do sports. I’m not bashing sports and students who play sports because they found something that they can enjoy while still being in school, but I believe education tops sports anytime.

Sports can be very time-consuming and take away time for homework and studying for tests. Sports are a great way to keep kids engaged and entertained, but seeing as how there are teachers I’ve witnessed who treat kids differently when they don’t play sports makes me believe that schools have made sports a huge priority.

Statistics show that the more an athlete stresses on their sports, the more likely it will mess with their mental health and cause a decrease in academics. Students need to be aware that education will come first before practicing before their game.
