Pros
Halloween spirit week is coming up and personally, I am excited. School can get very repetitive and boring. Fun things such as spirit weeks offer something fun and refreshing. It gets people excited to come to school and either dress up or see others dressed up. Additionally, it can bring a sense of pride and community to a school to see everyone wearing similar things for the same reason. I think changing things up encourages students to come to school and supports a lively school environment.
JHS is very good at making all the Spirit Day stuff that is easily accessible. A majority of the themes can be done with stuff you have lying around at home, such as Pajama Day or Pink Out. It doesn’t take much effort for these and it helps boost school morale. There are some themes that you don’t have stuff for, and that is perfectly fine. You do not have to dress up every day, and it is not a widely enforced idea that everyone should dress up for everything. Nobody wants students to break the bank buying clothes they will wear once for spirit week. It is more if you have it, wear it, and show support for the school. However, even if you aren’t dressed up, you can show your school spirit in other ways.
Overall, I think spirit weeks incorporate some fun into schools when things may seem hard. Many students feel isolated and stressed, but spirit days can help relieve some pressure by making that week lighthearted and building a sense of community. For students not involved in much at school, this can help them feel connected to their peers. All things considered, Spirit Week is beneficial to the student body.
Cons
Spirit Week is designed to bring joy and creativity to the school campus. Students are told to wear some specific clothes like pajamas, jerseys, or a particular shirt. Sometimes they have to match their clothes with someone. Sometimes it looks good but it is not, not all the students have friends. And maybe all students are not able to afford all colors of clothes for spirit week. Sometimes students get frustrated because they always look different from other students.
Sometimes spirit week also includes days to dress up like parents. It hurts the feelings of students who lost their parents and those who divorced. And then that day students do not go to school and it makes them lose their study. Schools should make more focus on the study of the students, not on the dresses or not on their friends. Schools always think about the happiness of students who are able to do all the external stuff, but never see the sadness of the rest of the students who are only able to look at others doing good stuff. Rather than motivating them, it creates them to become rivals to other students.
Spirit Week also affects the parents because sometimes children ask them for new stuff to do in spirit week and parents are not able to afford that. And sometimes siblings fight to wear a particular same thing in spirit week. Schools always take care of their image to other schools and parents, but sometimes schools also have to think for the students too.
As per me, schools should do something easy that all kids are able to participate in. For example, paper crown day, playing day, or movie day. In this kind of activity, all students get a chance to participate and have fun.
